FANTOME POINT
A 36' Auxiliary Sloop
Brewer Design #162

FANTOME POINT was designed for a client who wanted a modern aluminum auxiliary with good accommodation for ocean cruising combined with excellent all round performance. The performance end is assured by a deep, efficient fin, low wetted surface, a tall rig and moderate displacement.

The fully developed hull is constructed of aluminum to high standards, using athwartship and longitudinal framing to back up 3/16" plating. She is very strong indeed.

The accommodations are laid out to suit the owner and his wife, with a convertible double berth in the saloon for cruising and 3 single berths for a crew for occasional racing. A large galley, spacious head, big chart table and even a work bench forward are further testimony to her cruising ability.

The rig is tall and efficient and the keel stepped mast is strongly stayed. The flush deck hull provides an excellent working platform for sail handling and FANTOME POINT should do well in club racing.

The styling is reminiscent of the designs of the late Bill Tripp. FANTOME POINT's owner had long admired Tripp's work and asked that his new yacht emulate the flush deck/doghouse style that Tripp used successfully in so many of his designs.

For ocean cruising, many people will prefer a less extreme fin to the deep fin and skeg/rudder used on FANTOME POINT. These features do add greatly to the windward performance that her owner required but we can provide a design for a longer, shoaler fin with no problem. Using modern end plate design such a fin will give away very little in performance and she will be a fast and comfortable yacht for both coastal cruising and blue water voyages.
