MADA
A 50' Auxiliary Ketch
Brewer Design #178

MADA was designed for an east coast client who required a seaworthy shoal drafty auxiliary, one able to cross oceans in safety and comfort and equally able to cruise the fascinating canals of Europe. MADA is strongly built of aluminum with extra heavy bottom plating so she will be able to take the occasional grounding in her stride.

With wide beam and firm bilges, MADA is a powerful yacht and will show excellent speeds in a good breeze. Her deep ballasted centerboard assures good windward ability while the aft trim board allows the skipper to balance the helm for a wide variety of sail and wind conditions.

The ketch rig was preferred for the variety of reduced sail combinations it can set in heavy weather, plus the ability to set a handy mizzen staysail on a reach. The main mast is stepped on the keel and strongly supported with a double headsail rig and runners.

Flush decks offer a wide, safe working platform for sail handling while the aft cockpit is big enough for a good sized crew with space to spare.

The accommodations were laid out to suit the client's family with the owner's cabin aft and a 4 berth cabin for the children forward, the latter with its own head and stall shower. There are two seating areas so that the owner and guests can have privacy in the saloon while the children play in pilothouse dinette. The galley is roomy and complete with refrig, freezer and cooler compartments and there is generous stowage throughout the vessel.

Large tankage gives the yacht a wide cruising radius and a husky diesel of 100 hp will drive her nicely in the calms.

MADA is definitely an unusual vessel but she is also one of the few yachts that will be at home in deep water or shoal.
