SANDINGO
A 42' Fast Cruising Cutter
Brewer Design #232

SANDINGO was created for a Canadian client and beautifully built by John Dearden of Grantham's Landing, B.C. The hull form is our popular radius bilge shape and the construction is aluminum to very high standards.

The layout provides 4 permanent berths and the dining settee can be converted to a double if required. The accommodations are not squeezed to jam in unnecessary extra berths but, instead, spaces are large. The galley has extra good stowage and work top, the port settee is 7'6" long, the head contains a roomy stall shower and the forward cabin has generous stowage in its 9'6" length.

The unusual cockpit provides a removable bridge deck/raft locker and a removable rear center seat. When anchored, both of these can be lifted up onto the wide side decks to clear the cockpit for ease of entry to the cabin or the stern platform. The permanent windshield offers protection from the elements when the spray is flying.

The rig is similar to many single handed ocean racers. The outer roller furling jib is a large reacher and downwind sail and the inner roller furler/reefer is used for windward work. A detachable stays'l stay is fitted for a hanked on storm jib. This setup eliminates the need for changing headsails and does much to simplify handling for a small crew.

The general design was inspired by an article of mine in CRUISING WORLD magazine as a result of the magazine's survey for the perfect 40 foot cruiser. The owner saw the article and came to me for his interpretation of it. The result is SANDINGO, and the owner and his family have now sailed off in her for an extended voyage south.
